Google seems to have rolled out a big algorithm update and it has been causing a lot of ranking and traffic shake ups. As far as we know, Google hasn’t made any official announcement about the update yet, but Gary Illyes said that Google’s ongoing updates will be named “Fred” unless stated otherwise. Barry Schwartz posted about the Google Fred Update just today.
The update seems to be more of a link-quality update, since most websites using PBNs were badly shaken up. Also, even Black Hat World is confirming it.
Google though, has been keeping ranking algorithm changes unannounced since the start of this year. Last month, there was also an unconfirmed search update that no one from Google announced. Are they gearing towards not announcing ranking updates to combat spammers easier? We will never know.
Most tracking tools show fluctuations in rankings. As a matter of fact, Algoroo has seen a little shake up.
Although you may think that you may not have done anything bad for the last few months, it will be worth it to take a look on those links and disavow bad ones. Better be safe than sorry, and make health checks a regular task to keep safe from future updates.
We will have to wait until the next few days to see how everyone is affected by this update. With all the industry chatter though, Google doesn’t have to confirm the update.
